Our International Hotel Management programme is designed for those wishing to pursue a career in the Hotel and Hospitality sector.
If you are exploring career choices, we offer a Certificate of Higher Education: International Hotel Management. This is a stand-alone Level 4 award with a progression route for successful students on to the BA International Hotel Management programme.
However, if you are enthusiastic about a hospitality industry career then the BA (Hons) International Hotel Management course is unique in terms of its provision of work-based vocational training in a high-quality Hotel alongside academic study at UWTSD. Furthermore, we have a range of full-time and part-time programmes to suit anyone intending to carve out a career in the Hotel and Hospitality sector.
Whichever programme you decide is right for you, each year is divided into three academic terms. In the BA programme you spend the majority of your time studying academic modules, but these are supported by industry placement within a Hotel.
On placement you will spend time working in a range of departmental areas. The first having a more operational emphasis with the subsequent experience providing more advanced duties. You can be assured that you will develop enhanced guest service skills and a critical understanding of the operational requirements associated with different departments of a hotel and within the wider hospitality sector.
Academic study compliments your practical development, at all-time supporting your potential career development and the industry understanding that you will require for your future. Our graduates achieve a critical understanding of essential management theory and practice, provided within a global context which hotel organisations operate within, engaging with principles of sustainable business practice. Academic study providing a theoretical foundation of subject knowledge that is then applied within a practical context during the placements at a Hotel.
All International Hotel Management programmes have three entry points in the year.
These are usually in September, January and April.
Our on-campus and online study programme deliveries allow for excellent student interaction, not only with your module lecturer but also with the many guest industry experts that you will meet… these really are the people who influence the industry and ready to share their experiences and knowledge with you.
Our programmes are flexible and allow you to study at your own speed. You can choose to obtain a degree by studying full-time in two years or take it slightly more slowly and take three years. You may decide to study part-time where you have the flexibility to study more at periods when your work is quieter and less when your business is busy. With our part time route you can study up to a maximum of 6 years, completing each level before progressing to the next, and so we can adapt your programme of study to your particular need as long as it is within University guidelines. We aim to work with you to provide you with maximum flexibility and sound advice. Our colleague Muhammad is here to offer you advice and support in the application process and we have a strong pastoral support system to help you throughout your studies.
Students usually decide to either study 60 credits per year over six years to complete the 360 credits required to obtain their degree or they can study 80 credits per year which will enable them to complete their degree in just over 4 years. The modules that you study are the same modules as outlined on the two- and three-year degree programmes for full-time students. We also accept part-time students at any of the three entry points in the year. The important thing is that you have guidance and support from our excellent staff whenever you need it.
Whilst we normally require students to have achieved 86 UCAS Points we actively encourage applications from students with significant relevant experience who do not meet normal entry requirements. Students whose first language is not English are required to demonstrate competence in the English language, e.g. IELTS 6.0. Whilst grades are important, our offers are not solely based on academic results. We are interested in creative people that demonstrate a strong commitment to this subject area and so welcome applications from individuals from a wide range of backgrounds. To assess your suitability for your chosen course we arrange interviews for all applicants at which your skills, achievements and life experience will be considered as well as your qualifications, these are held both virtually and at campus.

Our programmes are designed to produce graduates with both a strong academic understanding and practical skills fit for the Industry. Feedback from employers tell us that many undergraduate hospitality programmes produce graduates with good theoretical knowledge, but who lack practical experience. The vocational emphasis of our programmes puts our graduates in a particularly strong position when applying for jobs and graduate management training schemes; such as the prestigious Marriott “Voyager” Graduate Management Training programme. Whilst other graduates choose to progress within family-owned hotels, other hospitality businesses, consultancy firms etc. Due to the range of skills students obtain on this degree our graduates are highly sought after for a range of different careers.

During this degree students will have the opportunity to attend several field trips within the UK and abroad. We attempt to keep the costs of fieldtrips as low as possible and many are significantly subsidised by the University.
Costs to students for UK trips are no more than £100 during the academic year. For overseas trips we aim to keep the cost below £500 and attendance on these will be optional.
For fieldtrips abroad, students will have the opportunity to pay for them in staged payments to lessen the financial burden. We normally expect the final payment for a fieldtrip to be made four weeks prior to the field trips taking place.
The International Hotel Management programmes are predominantly assessed through a combination of coursework and practical tasks, with a limited number of in-class examinations.
These tasks may include: Essays, Reports, Presentations, Research projects, Academic reviews, Blogs, Fieldwork related studies, Case studies, Placement assessment, Placement Learning Logs, In-class tests, Multiple choice papers.

At Level 4, students will be able to develop knowledge within Marketing, how they can provide excellent guest services, skills that are essential to support business operations and later on in that year, the skills required to become a successful hotel team member within a variety of Hotel departments.
At Level 5, students develop their academic knowledge so that their practical skills can be underpinned successfully, attending modules within finance, culture (including an introduction to an additional language) how they would manage and support people and also how organisations behave and the wider sense of management. For those that wish to develop their own business, they will also be introduced to entrepreneurism; and be able to consider sustainability within hospitality, and what that looks like.
At Level 6, students develop their management skills, considering how they could improve organisations within their workplace or from outside from a consultancy viewpoint. By choosing a subject that is contemporary to the industry they will present at a student-led conference and share their insight. This can be a developed theme from a project that they will have completed whilst on their hotel placements. They will use their placement modules to further enhance their practical skills and this can also support their knowledge when planning an International meeting or event from the hotel operations perspective.
